Why Should You Be Looking For Alumni On LinkedIn? Here's How To Find Them.

If an alumni from the university you attended contacted you, would you be more apt to respond? My guess is yes. The reasons may vary but it would be safe to say we would engage with the individual because our college years laid the foundation for our professional lives and the associated common bond of where we went to school is usually strong and everlasting.

But why would they be seeking you out and why should you too?

Relationships with alumni can provide you with direct knowledge of industries and organizations, opportunities to gain experience and advice, as well as the chance to expand your network and job search skills. Fellow alumni may be the door opener to match your objectives. Here's just a few examples:

  • If you are a jobseeker, an alumni might aid you in uncovering a potential lead or gain access to hiring managers inside a corporation.
  • Any sales and business development professional is always seeking insight and avenues available to speed up the sales process. Alumni may be able to point you in the direction of the appropriate decision maker.
  • Finding top candidates for a position you want to fill may be made easier if an alumni knows of excellent candidates.
  • Referrals or introductions of all kinds for collaboration, mergers, thought leadership, speaking engagements or project management.
  • For graduating college students, this is a goldmine. Finding an individual who not only graduated from your university but uncovering their common major with you, the industry and company they work in and location opens you up to requesting an informational interview. I wish I had this ability when I graduated!

If you agree with everything you've read so far, you might be asking yourself, "how can I easily gain access to my fellow grads and know where they live and work, what they studied and what they do and what they are skilled at?"

Prior to the new LinkedIn user interface update a tab labeled “Alumni” existed which allowed you to easily find out this information. If you’d like to uncover this today it will take a little work. Here’s how.

I graduated from Pace University with a BBA in Marketing. To start the process I typed Pace University into the search bar. I now select the full Pace University company page.

Clicking on the Pace University listing for the full school takes me to the page below. Once there, I clicked “See alumni” 

I am now presented with an early preview of the new alumni search page. Here interactively I am able to drill down to uncover individuals I may be interested in contacting based on their location, company, position, etc.

Whether you are seeking a new position or want to find out about a certain organization or city, you are presented with a great tool to uncover fellow grads and as we suggested earlier, who wouldn’t want to speak with a fellow alumni?

What happened to LinkedIn Pulse? Here’s Your Answer.

In the past I enjoyed the opportunity to follow LinkedInfluencers, channels of interest and media organizations offering free content via LinkedIn Pulse. A few years ago Pulse had it's own tab which made it simple to access. With the recent interface change finding "Pulse" requires a little direction. Have no fear. Here's how to find it.

Your #LinkedIn Home Page consists of many updates including the activity of those individuals in your network, suggested content (aka promoted content paid for by the advertiser), channels and media you follow and influencer posts.

Prior to the new user interface you could elect which influencers, channels and media you wished to follow by going to the bottom of your profile page and click “Discover More.” 

Clicking “Discover More” would open to this page:

When we queried #LinkedIn via their Help Center to determine if this page was accessible, their response was “At this time we don't have that specific functionality available, but I've sent your suggestion to our product team for consideration.”

Don't worry. Here's the link that gets you there: www.LinkedIn.com/pulse/discover

Nevertheless, this development makes no sense so we went about trying to determine if you can access #Pulse anywhere on the platform. Well, sure enough the answer is Yes with a twist. Here’s how.

  • Go to your Home Page Feed.
  • You’ll notice three horizontal dots in the far right hand corner of each post.
  • Clicking it reveals several options including “Improve My Feed: Get recommended sources to follow.”

Once you click on “Improve My Feed” you are brought to a new rendering of #Pulse choices with a twist. It's now called “Follow Fresh Perspectives.” Here you will see all offered categories of content and individuals including influencers, channels and media to follow. 

What happened to #Pulse? It morphed into Follow Fresh Perspectives. Let us know how you like the new functionality.

Breaking News! #LinkedIn Profile Background Image Size To Change... Again.

My partner Linda Bass called me into her office this morning. There's nothing special about that other than what she showed me. Linda was seeing her profile's background image as well as other people's background image in a reduced size, no longer stretched across the width of the page. Here's what it looks like.

I thought this must be a bug or she's part of some beta test that LinkedIn occasionally rolls out. Or maybe she zoomed in using her browser. Being the curious and inquisitive person Linda is, she queried LinkedIn about this via the Help Center. Here's their response.

That's right. You will be receiving this update to your profile background image. When? Let me know when you get it. I don't have it yet. Plus there will no longer be a profile image gallery for you to chose from. It will be either the default version or something you create. The previous size (which didn't last very long) was 1536x768. The new size will be 1584x396.

Actually, I think this is a good change as the stretched version was difficult to render properly for both desktop and mobile. At least now there will be consistency across both access points and if you desire, centering your logo will be more sensible.

What's Next? When you receive the new size be sure to adjust it so that it renders properly. Until next time...

How Important Is It To Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile For Mobile?

Think about this for a second. The percentage of unique #LinkedIn visitors who access it via mobile is 58%. Fifty-eight percent! For years the vast majority of us accessed LinkedIn via our desktops/laptops. Welcome to the new world. We've been building towards this for years and the future is now.

If you know this, doesn't it make sense to pay even greater attention to how your profile is rendered using the LinkedIn mobile app? The short answer is yes. With this in mind, I'd like to draw your attention to one very important aspect of your mobile LinkedIn profile. It's your Summary.

Note how your Headline leads your profile. Below it is your city and state and just below that is what I call your ~92 character Sub-Headline. Actually it is the beginning of your 2,000 character Summary.

Once you click on the three dots after your Sub-Headline (...), your entire Summary is presented. Now you see your Headline leading the Summary, followed by the Sub-Headline and finally the body of your Summary. Side note: If you have not optimized your Headline your current position title will appear where your Headline is rendered. This will thoroughly confuse the reader so please create a searchable Headline to increase your discovery success rate.

Eye Opening LinkedIn Statistics

Do you want increased views of your LinkedIn Profile? Below are some Eye-Opening statistics provided by Julie Inouye, Senior Director of Corporate and Product Communications at LinkedIn.

  1. Your profile gets 21x more views and 9x more connection requests if you have a Photo. Don’t do a selfie. Get a decent headshot with a solid background. SMILE and wear professional clothing!

          2. Make sure your current position is listed and described. Doing this can lead to 8x                   more profile views. Adding your Education can get you 17x more messages from                   Recruiters.   

            3. If you have listed your Industry your profile will receive 9x more views.

Above all, please remember to add your contact information in several places throughout your profile. Make it easy for prospects and recruiters to reach you!

Did You Know There's A Fresh Method To Move LinkedIn Sections Within Sections?

As you know we conduct LinkedIn workshops and personal training on a regular basis. During our sessions we are asked many questions related to an individual's profile and how much flexibility exists to manage it.

Sometimes an individual has two businesses listed as "Current". In some instances the two positions may exist within the same organization. Recently we were asked "Can I elect to have a particular position presented in the first position even if they are both current"? Absolutely you can! Here's how.

Previously you needed to place your cursor to the left of the multiple positions within the same organization. As shown below you would see two vertical bars that would require you to grab and pull them to reorder your positions. Please note we have placed purple vertical rectangles where the gray box appeared previously.

In a recent update, LinkedIn changed the method to do this. It now more closely mirrors what you would do if you were reordering complete sections by grabbing the arrow on the top of the right of the section, Now you are provided with an up/down arrow within the section. 

The example shown below highlights the "secondary" up/down arrow. It's hidden until you scroll over the section. By grabbing the up/down arrow shown you can now reorder the multiple positions you hold within the organization. 

It's pretty simple once you know where to find the tool and now you do! Happy to help with little LinkedIn tips like this to make your profile your own.

LinkedIn Publisher Post Sharing Change You Should Know About

Ever since LinkedIn opened its publishing platform to us all, we have found it to be a wonderful avenue to express our opinion, provide insight and most important update you on the latest LinkedIn developments. What's Next?  Here it is.

One of the great aspects of publishing your own posts is your ability to share it with your network, groups and individuals. Here's the good news. You still can. What's changed is the How.

First, you'll notice the user interface on each post has been modified to be larger and simpler. You may "Like" via thumbs up, "Comment" via the dialog box and now "Share" via the right facing arrow as depicted below.

Next, once you click on the arrow, you'll see the three choices provided for sharing. In this example we're electing to share to LinkedIn.

Finally, once you choose LinkedIn, the share box you're accustomed to seeing opens.


Pretty simple? We think so. But, now you'll know how to share your or someone else's post. Stay tuned for more updates and insight as LinkedIn makes changes to its platform user interface.

Where's Your LinkedIn Publisher Posts?

Anyone can see your most recent LinkedIn Publisher posts simply by visiting your profile. Did you ever wonder how to bypass your profile and send someone directly to your LinkedIn Publisher Posts? LinkedIn announced this morning a change to the url you can use to direct readers. The url has always been available.  It's simply changed and made to look more like a vanity url.

Here's the new version: https://www.linkedin.com/today/author/ibmedia

Until March 8th both addresses take you to the page you see below. From that point forward the old version will be retired.

Providing your posts' url is a great way to further your personal branding appeal.  Promote it as you would your profile url.
